Last Friday I called a man from our applicant pool. I left him a voice mail requesting that he call me back so we could set up an interview.
No return call.
Today I call him again, this time leaving a voice mail expressing the fact that if he didn't call me back I would have to assume he was no longer interested.
A few hours later, a woman calls my line. She says she is calling me because I left a message for her husband about a job interview.
"Yeah, I would love to talk to him. Is he available?"
"He's taking a nap."
".... He's taking a nap?"
"Yeah, he asked me to call you."
"But he was awake when he asked you to call me, right?"
"Well he was half-way. He's asleep."
"Okay. Have him get back to me."
"Okay, I'll tell him."
What a productive conversation. I now know what his main barrier to employment is: not getting himself a job.
I mean, if you were struggling financially and had a shot at a super easy job with some vocational counseling and training... would you not have woken up/stayed awake for that phone call?

I believe that's part of the problem,ie. not understanding the importance of the whole procedure.
I don't have a job.
It's kinda nice.
